Safe Keeping Receipt (SKR)

Acknowledgement that qualified assets are held with an agent or fiduciary in a custodial capacity — supporting verification and transaction readiness.

What is a Safe Keeping Receipt?

A Safe Keeping Receipt is issued when an asset owner places an asset in the care of an agent acting in a fiduciary or custodial role — usually a bank or a licensed financial institution. The receipt acknowledges that the asset is held safely on the owner's behalf and records the nature and value of the asset.

An SKR is not a negotiable instrument in itself. Its value lies in the verification it provides: it documents that a specific asset exists and is held under custodial control, which supports transaction readiness and due diligence.

Assets that may be covered

  • Shares and equity instruments
  • Bonds and fixed-income instruments
  • Real estate and property titles
  • Precious metals
  • Oil and natural resources
  • Other qualified assets accepted by the custodian

Funding and monetisation relevance

Where the underlying asset is qualified and verifiable, an SKR arrangement may support financing structures similar to those used with SBLCs, bonds, or bank guarantees. The receipt provides the custodial evidence that counterparties and financiers require before committing to a structure.

Verification first. An SKR is only as credible as the custodian and the asset behind it. We advise clients to verify the custodian's standing independently and to treat any proposal requiring upfront payment before verification as a red flag.

How we help

We advise on the structure of the custodial arrangement, coordinate with qualified agents and fiduciaries, and support the documentation and verification process — always subject to client qualification and independent due diligence.

Frequently asked questions

No. An SKR is an acknowledgement of custody, not a tradable instrument. It can, however, be used as evidence in support of financing or monetisation structures involving the underlying asset.

Verification of asset existence and custody, due diligence support, and as a component of financing structures — where the custodian and asset are accepted by the receiving institution.
