Bank Guarantee (BG)

A bank's written undertaking to honour a client's obligations if the client fails to perform — supporting contractual commitments, tenders, and commercial obligations.

What is a Bank Guarantee?

A Bank Guarantee is a commitment issued by a bank on behalf of a client (the applicant), promising to pay a specified sum to a beneficiary if the applicant fails to meet a contractual obligation. It transfers the credit risk of the applicant to the issuing bank, giving the beneficiary a reliable remedy.

Unlike a documentary letter of credit, which is primarily a payment mechanism in trade, a guarantee is typically invoked only when the underlying obligation is not fulfilled.

Common use cases

  • Bid / tender bonds — backing a bidder's commitment to a tender process.
  • Performance guarantees — securing delivery of contracted works, goods, or services.
  • Advance payment guarantees — protecting prepayments made to a supplier or contractor.
  • Payment guarantees — assuring a beneficiary of payment under a contract.
  • Customs and retention guarantees — supporting regulatory or retention obligations.

How we help

We assess the client's qualifying position, the purpose of the guarantee, and the beneficiary's requirements, then structure the mandate through established banking channels. Our support covers documentation, coordination with issuing banks, and delivery logistics.

Qualification required. Issuance of a Bank Guarantee is at the discretion of the issuing bank and is subject to the applicant's credit standing, collateral, and due diligence. Al-Rawi Group Ltd does not issue guarantees itself.

Frequently asked questions

Both provide a bank undertaking, but they differ in form and the rules that govern them: a Bank Guarantee is governed by the contract it secures, whereas an SBLC operates as a letter of credit governed by documentary credit rules. The right choice depends on the transaction and the beneficiary's requirements.

We support the common guarantee categories — bid bonds, performance, advance payment, payment, customs, and retention guarantees — subject to client qualification and the issuing bank's requirements.

The guarantee is issued by a bank or financial institution. Our role is to structure and coordinate the mandate on the client's behalf.
