Documentary Letter of Credit (L/C)

A conditional bank commitment in trade finance that reduces payment risk between buyers and sellers across borders.

What is a Documentary Letter of Credit?

A Documentary Letter of Credit is a bank's conditional undertaking to pay the seller (beneficiary) a specified amount, provided the seller presents the required documents — such as invoices, bills of lading, and inspection certificates — within the agreed timeframe. Payment is made against documents, not the goods themselves.

This arrangement is a cornerstone of international trade: the seller gains assurance of payment, while the buyer gains assurance that payment will only be released against compliant documentation.

Common use cases

  • Cross-border goods trade — securing payment in import and export transactions.
  • Commodity trading — standard settlement practice in commodity supply chains.
  • Capital equipment purchases — protecting payments for large-value procurements.
  • Revolving trade facilities — supporting ongoing trading relationships.

How we help

We advise on the structure of the L/C — including type (sight, deferred, or revolving), governing rules, required documents, and tenor — and coordinate the mandate through established banking channels. Our support covers documentation review, bank coordination, and guidance on compliance with documentary requirements.

Documents matter. Payment under a documentary L/C depends on presentation of compliant documents. Discrepancies in documentation are the most common cause of delayed or refused payment — we help clients get the paperwork right.

Frequently asked questions

Under a sight L/C, payment is made immediately when compliant documents are presented. Under a deferred payment L/C, payment is made at a specified future date after presentation. The right choice depends on the commercial terms agreed between buyer and seller.

The issuing bank acts on the buyer's instruction. In some transactions a confirming bank adds its own undertaking in the seller's jurisdiction, reducing risk further. Our role is to advise on and coordinate these arrangements.

Yes — documentary credits support structured and revolving facilities, back-to-back arrangements, and certain financing structures. We assess each requirement individually.
